Charbroiled Flank Steak with Chinese Five-Spice

Yields 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 pc – Flank Steak
  • 2 Tbsp – Ground Chinese Five-Spice
  • 2 Tbsp – Soy Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp – Vegetable Oil
  • 2 Tbsp – Sesame Oil
  • Fresh Ground Black Pepper – to taste

Technique

  1. Preheat barbecue to 200°C (400°F), clean grill with wire brush then season with vegetable oil
  2. Rub the steak with five spice, season with salt and drizzle with oil
  3. Grill the steak for 2-3 minutes, turn over for an additional 2-3 minutes until desired doneness
  4. Once finished be sure to rest the steak for several minutes allowing the meat to rest
  5. Slice thinly across the grain for maximum tenderness, serve with sesame oil and soy sauce

Chinese Five-Spice

Ingredients

  • 4 pc – Whole Star Anise
  • 3 pc – Cinnamon Sticks
  • 1 Tbsp – Whole Cloves
  • 1 Tbsp – Fennel Seed
  • 1 Tbsp – Sichuan Peppercorns

Technique

  1. Toast spices over medium heat, grind and combine, store in air-tight container
